A beautiful and luxurious new addition to the range and one of our very first tagua jewellery items from Colombia.
This particular pendant has been carefully constructed using 4 seperate pieces of tagua - two contrasting "slices" in grey and red and two "beads" - a large grey patterned one and a smaller round red one.
They are all secured with a strong but soft black thread, which has a maximum drop of 40 cm approx, but is fully adjustable, so will fit most sizes and can therefore be worn long or short. The total drop of the actual tagua pendant itself is an additional 10cm approx.
Our stunning tagua jewellery range is made with vegetable ivory. From the heart of the Amazon grows a special tree called the Tagua, or Ivory Palm. It produces an extraordinary fruit, the tagua nut, which has been used by the indiginous people for buttons, jewellery and carved objects for centuries.
The tagua nut is harvested and left to dry for 3 years. It is then cut into different shapes and dyed in a variety of natural colours, revealing the veins of the pure cellulose material giving each piece an individual and natural look. Most importantly, tagua is replacing the slaughter of mammal ivory in the textile and fashion industries as the only natural alternative to animal ivory. Furthermore, the income received from tagua crops is a strong incentive to maintain the trees of the Amazon.
This tagua nut (vegetable ivory) pendant was handmade in Fair Trade workshops in Colombia.
