Producer Information
APICOOP sells honey for its 1200 members in the eastern region of Valdiva, and for about 500 other beekeepers elsewhere in Chile. All export sales are to Fair Trade organisations.
Beekeepers for APICCOP talk freely about the huge difference Fair Trade benefits have made to their lives. They have access to low-interest loan schemes and the opportunity to share resources and experiences to develop their honey-producing capacity and increase their standard of living.
The producers are located in the Andes foothills and use honey, as a precious natural resource, to provide a sustainable income for their families. Mailhue is a typical APICOOP community, consisting of approximately 100 families. There is no electricity in the village and usually the children only go to school until the third school year. APICOOP gives 10 beehives and bee colonies to the farmer on credit, which must be paid back within 7 years. Beginners receive bee-keeping counselling. Once a year, all organisations involved get together to discuss upcoming decisions.
