On 7 December, Nestle announced that their Kit Kat chocolate confectionery product is going Fairtrade in the UK and Ireland as a breakthrough for cocoa farmers in Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast).
The move which will kick off in mid-January 2010, will benefit thousands of farmers in Côte d’Ivoire who as well as a Fairtrade price (or market price if higher), will receive additional Fairtrade premium payments to invest in long term community and business development projects of their own choice.

Kit Kat now carries The Fairtrade Foundation Mark
Whilst
THE FAIR TRADE STORE does not stock Kit Kat, nor indeed any Nestle products, here is your chance to comment on the announcement using this

Paul Wolfenden, owner of Southport-based THE FAIR TRADE STORE has been invited to speak about Fair Trade at the next get-together of Transition Southport, so why not come along and join us for an informal, fun evening on Thursday 10th December, 2009?
Transition Southport is a local Transition Towns group set up to promote practical, sustainable local projects to tackle the many challenges posed by the imminent decline of cheap oil, on which our current lifestyles depend.
Paul will hold a short, interactive presentation on what Fair Trade is really about and who benefits in the developing world from its trade, not aid, principles. Ask Paul questions and see some great Fair Trade products first hand, many of which make unique gifts and are skilfully handmade from recycled materials.
After the presentation you will have the chance to buy some of these Fair Trade gifts, which make ideal Christmas presents for the ethical consumer.

The event starts at 7.30pm and will run until about 9.30pm. Entry is free and open to anyone, of any age, who would like to have an enjoyable social evening and to learn a little bit more about the world around us. Enjoy some complimentary refreshments on the night. So why not invite your friends, family, work colleagues, neighbours and church along?
The Friends’ Meeting House is a small modern low building behind the Police Station, Courts and Fire Station. From the North end of Lord Street, turn right at the large roundabout, and then immediately first left at the corner of the Fire Station into Court Rd. The building is on your right, with a few parking spaces behind a low wall and shrubs. It is about 10 minutes walk from Southport railway station.
